Biography
Ian Sutherland, M.A., J.D.
I obtained my Masters Degree from the University of Toronto in 1978. I then attended Osgoode Hall Law School, from which I graduated in 1981. I was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1983.
My legal practice began in Parkdale where I worked for the much loved William Johnston until 1986. At that time I set up my own practice in Bloor West Village, where I have been ever since.
I have five adult children who were all raised on Durie Street and went to local schools. I take joy in the fact that they all live in Toronto, they are fine people and most are within a mile of my home. I am a family oriented person.
In earlier years my practice included Criminal Law and Civil Litigation. But I no longer practice in those areas.
I principally provide legal services required by families and small businesses. The following are my main areas of practice:
- Preparation of Wills and Powers of Attorney.
- Estate Administration.
- Real Estate Transactions.
- Business purchase and sale transactions.
- Corporate and Commercial law.
- Negotiated family law settlements in which I encourage my clients to be fair.
Apart from my legal practice I am the author of a series of three children’s books that I believe express my philosophy: “Grumps and Sweeties”, “The Book for Very Special Days” and “The Happy Camper’s Field Guide”. These were co-created with my son, Toby.
Further information about the books is available here: my children's books
